Music at Orchard Ridge UCC is varied and diverse.
Choir – rehearsals on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m.
Under the direction of Choir Director, Dr. Bruce Gladstone, the choir sings at least twice a month. Their music covers a wide range of styles and periods. Adults and teenagers are welcome to participate. The choir also rehearses at 9 a.m. on the Sundays they sing in worship.
Handbell Choir – rehearsals on Mondays from 6:45-8:00 p.m.
Under the direction of new director Paul Litterio (January 2014), the Handbells plays in worship on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Handbells have a long and beloved history at ORUCC, but we are always looking for additional ringers. No experience with bells is necessary, although the ability to read music is. They rehearse at 9 a.m. on the Sundays they play in worship.
Tru Function – rehearsals from 11:30-1 p.m. on Sundays in Lemuel Haynes music room
Tru Function is a Youth Rock Band developed several years ago during a brainstorming conversation on a youth mission trip. Led by Rob Martens, the group plays in worship once a month. Their music features several different instruments and vocals. They are always open to new participants in 8th grade or above. Tru Function has played at other churches, produced two CD’s and even written some original lyrics.
Music Connections for Children on Sunday Mornings
Children 2nd-5th grade are invited on the first three Sundays of the month to learn music and movement with Children’s Music Director, Julie Mazer from 10:15-11:00 a.m. Contact Tammy Martens or Julie Mazer for more information.
Solo singers and players
Our congregation invites and welcomes individuals to help lead worship through singing and playing. This is usually coordinated by the Rev. Winton Boyd. If you have an interest in sharing in this way, please don’t hesitate to offer your gifts.
As much as we love our musicians, the backbone of our music at ORUCC is congregational singing. Because we are a community that comes from many different backgrounds, we sing a wide range of songs. Our hymnal is the UCC hymnal, The New Century Hymnal, but we supplement that resource with music from other traditions and around the world. Each Sunday service begins with “gathering music” where we often try new songs. We are indebted to the songwriters and singers of the world who contribute greatly to our faith journey by the work they have created.
