Sanctuary – opening prayer from Sunday, July 29th

Sanctuary, written and led by LuAnn Greiner

We gather as a community on this day

to honor and praise you dear God,

to connect with our church family,

to stop if only momentarily and experience this day with some measure

of quiet,

of contemplation,

of listening more than speaking

of tending to this sanctuary around us and the sanctuary within.

Today, in this space we sit with our questions, our yearnings,

our grief, our joys.

We celebrate new life and take time to remember lives lost.

With trust and some trepidation we lay the realities of our lives at Your table and ask for Your good grace & company on our path.

And what of the rest of our week?

The incessant chirp of a chipmunk outside

our window says “wake up, wake up”!

Small waterfalls in a nearby stream say “listen, listen”.

Children giggling down the hallway soothes a heavy heart.

The recovery of the wilting tomato plant after the rains

have finally come speaks of hope,

its greening fruit hanging heavy on the vine whispers “be patient”.

In the middle, in the center, between our Sundays

You nudge us forward, toward life & hope & community.

Sanctuary around us.

Sanctuary within.

How else to experience Your presence

but to pay attention & listen intently.

Amen
