Bible for Beginners begins Sunday, March 14

How do you feel about the Bible? Good? Bad? Indifferent? That is where we’ll start with a two-week class called, “The Bible for Beginners,” on March 7th and 14th, 2010, 9:00-9:50 am, at in Room 14.
I’ve loved the Bible all my life. My parents taught me the names of all the books of the Bible through singing; read Bible stories to me at bedtime; helped me memorize hundreds of Bible verses; educated me in the Bible through Sunday School and Worship; and supported me in my vocational goals of educating other people in the beauty and mystery of the Bible. Certainly, no other collection of books has impacted my life more than the Bible. And to this day, I’d rather discuss the Bible with a group of people than any other collection of books.

But I’ve changed my mind about the Bible. I’ve given up my pre-critical naiveté about the literal “plain sense” of the Bible and have begun to listen to the Bible in new ways. I now embrace the Bible as a collection of books which points, witnesses or testifies to the truth, but is not ITSELF the truth.

Will you join me on March 7th and 14th for this class? We’ll talk about why the Bible is important and relevant for us today, ways you can access and use the Bible easily, some of the important themes of the Bible, and how the Bible interacts with itself and with the people who read and appreciate it. Hope to see you on March 7th!
