The Meaning of our Christological Language

We had a lively conversation about many things in Java and Jesus at ORUCC on Sunday, December 9th, including the meaning of the title “son of God.” I thought it would be good to follow up the conversation with some further reading and writing on the issue. This post contains some scholarly insight I have found helpful. While I appreciate the historical and sociological understanding, I do hold hope that they lead, most of all, to deeper proclamations of faith in our lives. I am deeply committed to helping us claim or reclaim Jesus at the core of our Christian faith. I think Borg and Crossan, in their own ways, help us see beyond just language. Following these two short readings are some questions for consideration.

2008 - A Year to Explore and Experiment

Next Generation Report

Executive Summary of the Full Next Generation Mission Team Report (December 2007)

On Tuesday, December 4th, the Next Generation Mission Team (NGMT) co-facilitators formally presented their report to the Leadership Team of our congregation. Last May, we commissioned the NGMT to develop recommendations to “strengthen and deepen our faith through expanded programming for all ages.” The team was asked to make recommendations for ORUCC to live into its vision of being spiritually alive, joyfully inclusive, and committed to justice – over the next 15-20 years. Co-facilitated by Barb Hummel and Helene Nelson, the NGMT met diligently from July through late November.

Rather than identifying a project, the NGMT is suggesting a pathway by which we can enact our vision statement as a community seeking to follow God. (Read both the full report above). In that light, they suggest that 2008 be a year of “exploring and experimenting.”

This faith based and strategic exploration will be guided by:

6 Themes
4 Explorer Teams

If This Isn’t a Time for Prophets of Peace and Light, When is?

Published by ORUCC under Sermons

Preached by Winton Boyd on Sunday , December 2, 2007
Few things are more complicated than trying to erect a new monument in the heart of Washington, D.C. Local committees, federal investigators, landmark boards, and one commission after another must approve each project. But on September 9, 1997, a gigantic crane cut through the red tape of Judiciary Square and lowered a four-ton sculpture to its permanent cement base. Continue Reading »
